Unite gives tough time to BA

7 February 2010 9 One Comment
British airways (BA) want to cut approximately 3700 jobs and pay freeze of up to two years. Unite cabin crew members at British Airways have decided to go for strike against BA. Result is cancellation of domestic flights. Unite has also launched a video to raise their voice. Major issues that this video covers are low wages, burden of work, and hindrance in providing professional services. This is their second strike since 1997.Unite has also filed a case against BA in London’s Supreme Court and there is a chance that strike might not go ahead. Last year, BA made losses of £401m and is currently losing up to £3m a day. This dispute is affecting up to 1 million travelers. Unite is of the view that they are also sincere and well-wisher of BA and they work hard for its prosperity but BA should not impose its terms and conditions of its own and also offered the company a way to save £100million through changes and a two-year pay freeze but BA did not pay any importance to their proposal. Both parties are also in touch with each other to resolve that dead lock. Unite’s assistant general secretary, Len McCluskey, hopes that the result of the vote would force BA to reopen negotiations. A judgment is expected later in the day. BA is of the view that bailout Unite of is fake because mostly people who are voting are past members of BA. It also says that its revenue is down and is not currently profitable so it must reduce cost to restore profit and its cabin crew is making very little progress in their revenue so it should be downsized. Unite will ballot its 12,000 members which make up 98% of the airline’s cabin crew. It is also stated that if this disputes lasts long then it will affect revenue of BA.
