U.S military recruits local Afghans

10 February 2010 54 No Comment
The U.S military is planning to recruit local Afghans to improve the safety of the country. They will be paid by the pentagon. U.S military is in constant dialogue with all tribes of afghan tribes to raise army of afghan locals. U.S military imposed this idea of recruiting locals in Iraq and got better results. In Iraq, Americans signed up more than 100,000 Iraqis, most of them Sunnis and many of them insurgents, to keep the peace. Some cynics are of the view that this step will increase instability and will create ‘War Lords’ and said that the war in Iraq should not be compared with war in Afghanistan. It will also increase corruption and situation will get worse when they will not be paid. Tribes in Afghanistan have also their doubts. Al Qaeda still has its roots in Afghanistan. Tribes and people still fear from Taliban. They still have influence in tribes and also recruiting people against U.S military. Last month, a local Taliban commander, Mr.Jameel, surrendered with his 10 companions and declared not to fight. Government offered him no protection and in result Taliban gunmen entered in his house and killed him, his wife, his brother, his uncle and his daughter. One of the Pashtun tribes Zayawalat is also reluctant to join this offer by U.S military. Zawalayat is the fifth largest Pashtun tribe in Afghanistan. Many Afghan leaders also opposed this military plan and asked the Americans for more time. President Karzai has is also visiting Pashtun tribal leaders close to the border with Pakistan this week in an attempt to recruit individual fighters to the Afghan National Police. Afghan’s Interior Minister Adul Mannan said that only those fighters will be paid who will register their weapons. Sher Mohammad Akhonzada, the former governor of Helmand, has already hired 500 fighters.
