Deadliest train accident ever in Belgium

16 February 2010 122 No Comment
Monday, February 15, Eurostar services between the UK and Brussels remained suspended today as an inquiry began into the Belgian commuter train crash in which at least 18 people were killed and more than 55 people were wounded. Rescuers are of the view that these numbers can increase significantly. This incident happened near a suburban station 15 kilometres south of Brussels. One of the drivers of two trains has survived with serious injuries. Police will question the driver when his condition allows it, said National Railways spokesman Jochen Goovaerts. Belgian police investigators will examine the black boxes of the two trains to try to determine whether mechanical failure, human error or weather conditions were primarily responsible for the crash .In a statement on its website, Eurostar said: “We advise that if you do not need to travel to Brussels on Tuesday 16 February that you defer or cancel your trip. You will be able to exchange your tickets for a later date or have them refunded.” One train had been going from Leuven to Braine-le-Comte, while the second train had been travelling from Quievrain to Liege. The trains, carrying 250–300 people, collided in snowy conditions during the morning rush hour. A third train was traveling along a parallel line at the moment of the accident: it was not directly involved in the collision, and its driver managed to stop it without injuries to any of the passengers. The high-speed Thalys services to France, Germany and the Netherlands have also been suspended. Eyewitnesses described the collision as “brutal”, with passengers being thrown “violently” around the carriages. Train services were interrupted along the line where the collision happened. The Governor of Flemish Brabant, Lode De Witte, said that 162 people had been injured: of those, 55 people had been hospitalized, and 11 were in a “very serious” condition.
