USA/IRI – Team USA Puts Sport Before Politics On Eve Of Iran Clash
Durant and Krzyzewski Insist Basketball Comes First Before Istanbul Game
ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) –– Team USA has extended a hand of friendship to its Iranian rivals before tomorrow’s 2010 FIBA World Championship game despite the political tensions between the two countries.
The Group B leaders insist the diplomatic rivalry between the nations will have no bearing on the match at Istanbul’s Abdi Ipekci Arena.
Forward-Guard Kevin Durant said: “We are just here to play basketball. The political situation is something we cannot control. We have to go and just play the game of basketball.”
His sentiments were backed by coach Mike Krzyzewski who said: “It is a sporting event. We have respect for Iran.
“I actually played them in the 1970s when I was in the armed forces. I have great feelings for the country. They are sportsmen and so are we and we will have a great game.”
Team USA has so far beaten Croatia, Slovenia and Brazil while Iran has lost to Brazil and Croatia before finally notching a first win against Tunisia on Monday.
The team has been supported so far in Istanbul by the Minister of Sports for Iran, Ali Saeedlou
Commenting on the high-profile showdown, Patrick Baumann, Secretary-General of FIBA, basketball’s world governing body, said: “This is one of 80 games taking place and we are sure it will be played in a competitive, professional and fair way.
“Basketball is a truly global sport and a force for good, bringing countries together. We have had an exciting tournament so far and I’m sure this match will contribute to that excitement.”
