Pakistan’s sprinter Naseem Hameed gave brilliant performance in 11th South Asian Games. She claimed the title of ‘South Asia’s fastest sprinter’.22 years old athlete who belongs to a very poor family covered the distance of 100 meter in 11.81 second and won the gold medal. Second runner up was Sri Lanka’s Pramila Priya-darshani who got silver medal and was 0.12 second away. She had a warm welcome on Karachi airport. She credited all her performance to her parents and coaches who gave her confidence and courage. Surely this is a big achievement for Pakistan and especially for Pakistani girls. Now she is their role model. She is Pakistan’s first woman athlete to get gold medal in a sprint .Pakistan always a mere performance in athletics and surely this event will bring a positive change in athletics. “I have no words to express my happiness. God has given me what I wanted,” she said. “And I will do my best to compete and win at higher levels like the Commonwealth Games and Olympics,” she vowed. The President Asif Ali Zardari and Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan have already congratulated her and have announced prize of rupees one million. Thousands of people gathered in the airport of Karachi and showered flowers on her. Surely, this was historic moment. She said that she had built confidence level and now determined to boost her performance. At the 2010 South Asian Games, the athletics events were held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh from February 6 to February 9.In this event Pakistan won 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 4 bronze medals. Sport experts are of the view that Naseem’s achievement will encourage country’s women in sports. Pakistan’s Sports Minister Ijaz Jakharani said “These athletes are our assets and we will send them to the Commonwealth Games as well as the Olympics in the future,”.
