President of Sri Lanka, Rajapaksa dissolved parliament tonight and ordered to arrest the opposition leader Sarath Fonseka. Mr. Fonseka was former general of sri lankan’s army. He is now the leader of opposition.Rajapaksa also announced fresh elections. On the other side opposition called for nationwide protests and condemned him. Mr.Sarath had a successful career in army and he was main figure against the Tamil Tiger. He led the Army to victory over the Tamil Tigers last year.Fonseka was arrested by the military on Monday on sedition charges. Main cause for his arrest is that he dialogged with politicians when he was army chief. At the time of arrest mr.Forseka were in a meeting with other politicians who were in his favour. They said that military did not tell the reason of his arrest at that time.Secretary of Mr.Fonseka was also arrested with him. Executive director of the Center for Policy Alternatives, Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu said “They did not want (Fonseka) to be in the campaign as some sort of a magnet for the opposition,”. He warned that this step is not good for the progress of newborn democracy in this country. Both, president and former army chief are heroes of sri lanka and fought against Tamil Tigers. According to media rights groups, sri lanka is one of the most dangerous countries for dissenting journalists. “We will take this matter to courts, we will take it before the people and we will take it before the international community,” said Rauf Hakeem, another opposition lawmaker. Human right groups also accuse of shelling hospitals and densly populated areas when he was in command.During the final months of fight against Tamil Tigers, more than 70,000 people were killed and more than 100,000 peoples were displaced. Sri lanka faced 26 years civil war and surely this step will put hurdles in the way of democracy..
