Lansley warns Alan Johnson is “a roadblock to NHS reform”

31 May 2009 32 No Comment
Andrew Lansley has attacked Alan Johnson?s record as Health Secretary, and accused him of trying to ?dance around the big issues? rather than tackle them head on.

Andrew, the Shadow Health Secretary, warned that the vital NHS reforms begun under Alan Milburn and Tony Blair have ?completely stalled? under Mr. Johnson and Gordon Brown.

He stressed, ?Instead of driving through key reforms in the NHS, Alan Johnson?s been eyeing up another job. And the NHS is suffering as a result.?

Andrew outlined four areas where progress has stalled under Mr. Johnson:

Patient choice has not increased sufficiently
The supply of NHS healthcare has not been opened up to new providers
The Government have not given GPs real control over their budgets
The roll-out of Foundation Trusts has stalled
Andrew promised a Conservative Government would end Labour?s ?tick-box, target culture? and instead ?focus on what matters ? results?:

?We would trust doctors and nurses to do what?s best for their patients, and then focus on the outcomes they achieve, rather than the hoops they are made to jump through by Whitehall.?

And he set out his aim to ?deliver healthcare that is truly among the best in the world? by empowering health professionals and by making the NHS ?truly accountable? to patients not politicians.
