Bangladesh Hopes for More Engagement with ASEAN

25 January 2011 296 No Comment

Bangladesh recognises ASEAN’s economic and political-security achievements, said the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Indonesia, H.E. Golam Mohammad. The Ambassador met with the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, at the ASEAN Secretariat yesterday.

The Ambassador also conveyed Bangladesh’s interest to appoint an Ambassador to ASEAN – a wish that was welcomed by Dr Surin. As stipulated in the ASEAN Charter, non-ASEAN Member States and relevant intergovernmental organisations may appoint and accredit Ambassadors to ASEAN. Today, there are over 40 Ambassadors to ASEAN.

H.E. Mohammad also said that the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), of which Bangladesh is a Member State, could learn from ASEAN how to work with its diversity of cultures and political systems in containing bilateral disputes and moving forward.
