?1.1bn Faster, Greener Railway Plan Unveiled
A new railway electrification project will create a faster, greener and more reliable service for rail passengers, the Prime Minister has said.
The Government will invest ?1.1 billion to electrify two major railway lines, from London to Swansea and Liverpool to Manchester, in a modernisation programme it hopes will help create a world class railway.
Work on electrification of the two lines will begin immediately.
Announcing details of the project during a train journey to Wales, Gordon Brown said electrification would reduce carbon emissions and create a better service for passengers.
?We are going to have a greener, more reliable, higher quality, faster and more consumer friendly railway as a result, because we are going to cut times for journeys and make journeys more reliable.?
The work is expected to help cut travel times between Liverpool and Manchester from 44 to 30 minutes and to shorten the trip form London to Swansea by 19 minutes.
The Government also announced plans to consider the case for further electrification projects including the midland main line (between London, derby, Nottingham and Sheffield) and routes between Manchester and Preston and Liverpool and Preston.
