Global economists meet in Downing Street

27 July 2009 41 No Comment

The Prime Minister met senior global economists at Downing Street to discuss how to deliver economic commitments made at the London Summit in April.

Among those attending the breakfast meeting were Joseph Stiglitz of Colombia University, Harold James from Princeton and Jim O?Neill of Goldman Sachs.

Gordon Brown said while banks have now been stabilised, more work is needed to develop a strategy for a full return to growth.

?What I would like to explore this morning are the short-term, medium-term and long-term changes that we?ve got to make so that we have a world economy that is capable of growth in the years to come.?

Mr Brown is tasked with reporting back to the G20 in Pittsburgh in September about reform of international financial institutions.

The discussion with senior global economists at Downing Street will feed into his report.
