Plan Ahead To Help Keep Kids With Allergies, Asthma Safe At School

July 30, 2010—As the start of another school year draws near, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) is offering parents some tips to keep children’s allergies and asthma under control.

“The beginning of the school year is an exciting time for kids, but children with uncontrolled allergies and asthma can face health hazards,” said James Sublett, MD, chair of the ACAAI public relations committee.

High levels of fall pollens and molds can trigger seasonal asthma and allergy attacks. Allergens and viruses encountered in the classroom may also be responsible for flare-ups.

Whatever the triggers, an increase in asthma attacks during the fall leads to an increase in children’s visits to the emergency room at this time of year, according to the ACAAI. Asthma is also the top reason why kids miss school on a persistent basis throughout the year.

The ACAAI offers the following tips to help keep kids with allergies and asthma healthy during the school year:

* Schedule a doctor visit before the school year starts. Your child’s health care provider can develop or update a treatment plan for the child’s allergies or asthma.
* Visit your child’s school. Tour the areas where your child will spend time, look for possible allergy and asthma triggers, and consider ways your child can avoid these triggers.
* Speak with all school personnel who may be involved with your child. Educate everyone from the secretary to the gym teacher about your child’s health issues and provide them all with a copy of your child’s treatment plan.
* Talk about what to do in an emergency. Make sure your child and all of his or her caregivers know what to do in case of an allergic reaction or asthma attack.
* Discuss allergy and asthma issues with your child. Empower your child to be aware of triggers, such as chalk dust and classroom pets, and to avoid them when possible.
